Hope you make this a great semester for you at Mesa Community College.  We are glad to see many new and familiar faces returning to our office to get involved and learn more about what great opportunities we have to offer.  Here's our fourth post on "Civic Engagement Connections" edited by the wonderful Wizard of Oz, Rylan:

Maps for Your Class
Maps are very important for getting around campus.  If you need help finding a building, check out the campus map for Southern & Dobson and Red Mountain.  You can also get help from our Center for Service-Learning office (Lowel Level Kirk Center) or the Student Life Front Desk (2nd level, main floor of the Kirk Center).

Construction Underway
Construction is still underway in the Kirk Student Center.  Please be careful as you make your way through campus.

Hours of Operation 
The Center for Service-Learning is open from 8-7pm Monday-Thursday and 8-5pm on Friday at the Southern and Dobson Campus.

Get Your Taxes Done for FREE!
Need help preparing your 2012 tax return? Mesa United Way's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program may be able to help! Running through April 13, 2013, Mesa United Way's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) will be here on both the Southern & Dobson and Red Mountain campus doing free tax filing! This service is offered to both students and the public.

Scholastic Book Fair - February 22nd
One day, and one day only - our staff will be over by the NU101/Life Sciences Amphitheater selling books to raise money for our children's literature activities, such as Dr. Seuss' Birthday.  The event will be on February 22nd from 9-2pm - please stop buy and support literacy!

AZDS Seeks 4 Volunteers

Arizona Disabled Sports is a nonprofit organization dedicating in providing sports and recreation opportunities for individuals with all types of disabilities.  Volunteering with our organization can lead to many benefits.  They currently are recruiting for 4 different opportunities.  If you are interested, please click here.


AZ Youth Town Hall on "Higher Education in Arizona"

AZ Youth Town Hall will have a "Higher Education in Arizona" Town Hall. It take place at Rio Salado College Conference Center on April 10. Although the event is free, we do need students to register using the link provided (http://aztownhall.org/Events_Calendar).

Zaharis Elementary Media Center Seeks up to 5 Volunteers

Zaharis Elementary Media Center is looking for up to 5 student volunteers.  Whatever regularly fits your schedule, between 7:30 am and 3:00 pm.  Contact Mrs. Davis or Mrs. Keech at 480-308-7237.

PHI THETA KAPPA ANNOUNCEMENTS

Join Phi Theta Kappa
The semester is underway, but its not to late to sign up.  Three qualifications are needed to join:
  1. Currently enrolled in at least 1 credit hour at Mesa Community College
  2. Have completed 12 credit hours of course work over 100-level at a Maricopa Community College location (i.e. MCC) 
  3. Have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher


Mentor Nomination Form
Please make sure to nominate a mentor when you join Phi Theta Kappa.  This is your chance to recognize an MCC employee who made a difference to your academic career.

General Meetings

AMERICORPS UPDATE
3rd Annual Service in Action Photo Contest
Colorado Campus Compact is thrilled to announce the 2013 Service in Action photo competition! This competition is open to all civically-engaged students from our member and partner institutions, including AmeriCorps member actively enrolled in Compact Service Corps. Walk United
In partnership with Mesa United Way, MCC will host Walk United on Saturday, February 9, 2013, to support MCC students and Mesa community members. The event will feature a 5K walk/run at the Southern and Dobson campus.  All proceeds will go towards student scholarships and to Mesa United Way for those in need within the Mesa Community. By supporting Walk United, participants will join together with other community members to support students and their neighbors in need as they learn about scholarship and charity options available. Looking to find a community partner to do your service at?  Want to learn more about what our representative service-sites have to offer?  This is a great place for students to find a service-learning placement. We hope instructors bring their class and/or encourage students to attend.

CAMPUS ANNOUNCEMENTS

Welcome Back MCC Students!
Classes starts back for MCC students on Saturday, January 12th.  Check out the campus map for Southern & Dobson and Red Mountain to find out where your classes are.

Construction Underway
Be aware that construction may still be going on in the Kirk Student Center and many of the paths are blocked with barricade signs.  Normal routes may have changed and you may have to enter through the Lower Level or 3rd Floor, depending on construction.


Student Services Returns to Their Regular Location
Many of your highly-needed Student Services - financial aid, registration, advising, Veterans Affairs, testing center - will be back in their traditional location starting Monday, Jan 14th .  Look above for campus maps or stop by the Center for Service-Learning office (Lowel Level Kirk Center) or Student Life Front Desk (2nd main level Kirk Center) and we can help direct you to your desired location.

Welcome Back MCC Employees and Students!
Even though classes starts back for MCC students on Saturday, January 12th, many MCC employees are starting to head back to campus today. 

Construction Underway
Be aware that construction is going on in the Kirk Student Center and many of the paths are blocked with barricade signs.  Please note as you attempt to reach your destination as your normal route may have changed.


Student Services @ the Library
Many of your highly-needed services - financial aid, registration, advising, Veterans Affairs, testing center - have been currently moved to the library at this time for "one-stop shopping".
